Preventative Maintenance
Why is preventative maintenance important? You might think: if my car isn't broken, why should I take it to a repair shop? The best way to avoid expensive and unexpected bills is to stay on top of yoru regularly scheduled services. Scheduled services include oil changes, coolant system flushes, transmission fluid flushes, brake checks and other services. These scheduled services help prevent breakdowns and will allow your mechanic to stay alerted to items that may become problems in the future - such as worn brake pads, battery health and oil leaks. Pretentative maintence is not only good for the car's longevity, but also for the longevity of your budget!
Finding a Repair Shop
Looking for a repair shop can be as easy as typing "repair shop" into Google, or looking up ads in the newspaper. However, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming, and how do you know that you've found a trustworthy repair shop where they do quality work? The best way to find a reputable repair shop is through recommendations from friends, neighbors, interview reviews or Better Business Bureau.
If you don'y have a regular auto shop you might want to start looking, even if your car doesn't need an immediate repair. Remember, the worst time to find a repair shop is when your car has broken down or during an emergency. When choosing a shop, don't just look at the prices they have during a sale, or the size of the garage. Many larger shops and franchised shops don't have the ability to keep up with the volume of customers they service and won't be able to give personalized care to every customer they see.
It would be to your advantage to begin looking for a repair shop when your car needs scheduled maintenance - this way you can start off with low cost, small items and get to know the shop. If the service you received for an oil change isn't satisfactory, do you really want these same mechanics doing a much larger service like replacing a timing belt or doing work on your engine?

Oil Changes
Oil changes used to be simple services, almost 95% of all vehicles took 10w30 oil. Today's vehicles have much narrower specifications for fluids like oil, antifreeze and brake fluids. Oils now come in many different viscosities and special additives, such as 0w30 oil which was unheard of (and rightly so, as it didn't exist!) five years ago. Thinking that a wider variety of oils gives you, as a customer, a wider range of choices is, unfortunately, incorrect. Having the wrong oil in your car is like receiving the wrong blood in a transfusion - definitely something you don't want. Skimping on an oil change, as simple as it might sound, can be detrimental to your car. To use the blood metaphor again, getting an oil change from a car wash, while it might be cheaper, is a little like getting your blood work done at a grocery store. When a qualified repair shop changes the oil in your car, not only will they take the time to thoroughly look over your car but they will also be able to inform you to the car's overall condition. And who knows, they might even give you that five dollar car wash too!
